Neighborhood Preparedness
Neighborhood Response Teams (NRTs) are grassroots-led initiatives where neighbors come together to prepare for large-scale emergencies, such as hurricanes, floods, and other disasters. With support from Mobile County EMA, NRTs empower communities to take responsibility for their own preparedness and provide assistance to one another in times of need.
The strength of NRTs lies in the social connections neighbors build, fostering a community spirit where everyone looks out for each other. In today’s busy world, NRTs help us “create a community” by encouraging neighbors to build relationships, ensuring they are ready to respond as a united team when disaster strikes.
What Does It Involve?
Each team of 15-20 (or more) homes is supported by Block Captains, who help coordinate preparedness and response efforts within their block. Led by team leaders and Block Captains, neighbors can work together to:
- Administer basic first aid or assist in turning off utilities, such as gas, in case of a leak.
- Support neighbors with special needs or those with Access & Functional Needs (AFN).
- Check on children who may be home alone waiting for parents to return from work during an emergency.
- Ensure that no neighbor is overlooked and that everyone is accounted for and safe.
